I have never really gotten into Buffalo nickels because I was always more interested in silver coinage. Now that I'm reading about this nic-a-date stuff, it sounds like it's not too bad. Can people buy a lot of dateless Buffalo nickels, drip some nic-a-tone on and if they get any good dates sell them? PLEASE excuse my ignorance. I know nothing about Buffalo nickels ect. And if you do use nic-a-tone, do you have to say you did or is it easy to spot?

Yep, it works. And if you get rare dates, you can resell them. The acid restoration is extremely easy to spot. You should be up-front about it when selling the coins, because they're going to see it when they look at the coin and you don't want to give the impression that you're trying to be dishonest. Acid-restored coins sell for maybe maybe 10-20% of G-4 value, so you really have to find a key date to make it worthwhile, which can mean going through a lot of coins, so I don't know if you can make a lot of money off it or something.

I'm trying to assemble a very cheap, low grade set of Buffalo nickels this way. I've got all the hardest earlier key dates so far, some of the later ones are going to be trickier because they aren't as frequently worn dateless, so I'll have to do some trading and bargaining.

I like vinegar because it gives a more"even" look to the acid wear on the coin. I use double strength white vinegar and in some cases had to soak them 3 weeks to get results. Nic-a-date is probably quicker but it makes the coin look blotchy.

I prefer Nic-a-Date (Nic-a-Tone is a different product for a different purpose). If I change my mind, I can stick it in vinegar later and it'll even things out.
