These are fascinating little coins, and relatively inexpensive. Of course the 1732, 1733, and top grades are seldom seen, but in three months I've assembled about 30 different, from 1735-1820.

And varieties...it seems like every date has an over-date. I am most interested in the over-dates and transitional types (Carlous IIII with bust of Carlous III).

I've attached some pics of a couple over-dates. I discovered the super macro function on the camera, duh, so the photos are better.

1735/4

FANTASTIC!

This is an interesting area of numismatics.

The normal dates are at times harder to find than the overdates. The dies were reused until worn out. The dies of a previous year or years were recut with the new date or even assayer in future years. No waste there at the mint.

Imagine the cost of the coin if you were to collect US colonials. Yikes

An interesting area of collecting to be sure. Understudied and underrated - perhaps due to size of the coin and low mintages.

The varieties in general are nearly endless. See how long it takes for you to find coins struck from the identical die pairs. That is a challenge.
