Trying to find a decent slabbed 1916 SLQ in G4 or G6
Would need to be graded by a major grading company.
They bid in the greysheet for 2100.00
How much to you think one would have to pay and do any of
my coin buddies have any leads on one ?

Thanks, John

Well there is this one, but a bit over your grade... http://cgi.ebay.com/1916-25c-NGC-MS...em27bc6c9edb

This was the lowest grade I saw on ebay... http://cgi.ebay.com/1916-25c-PCGS-F...em2c5da12b22

Perhaps you can contact him and see if he as lower grade not up on ebay.

Hi Vanbroj. I was recently in your same position looking for a 1916 in the same grade range. I ended up buying this one raw for around $2000 and had it certified by ANACS as G-4. It was one of the only keys that I felt comfortable enough with the diagnostics to buy raw, as it is usually quite dangerous. I've cherrypicked 4 dateless examples in the past, which is another way you could go if on a budget.
Here is the one in my collection:

In G4, certified by the top 3 they usually range between 2600-3200 retail, and G-6s can carry that up to 3800. In this grade range, you will make serious sacrifice to date legibility. There is a huge variance in quality between these grades. My example shows the bottom of 3 digits. Some G4s only have a faint shadow of the "6" visible and weak rims, and I've seen G-6s that have the bottom parts of all 4 digits fully visible along with the loop on the "6".

I would intensely study the pictures in the Heritage archive of G-4 to G-6 examples, I think it is the best online resource for this coin/grade. Feel free to run one by us too if you decide on one, as it's a huge financial commitment.

Best of all, ENJOY THE HUNT!

On a sidenote, the first dateless 16 I found, was recently resold on Heritage, and brought $1380. Still a strong market for those!

Good hunting vanbroj! They are out there, and, like johnny54321's excellent example, I would only go with ANACS, NGC, or PCGS.

If you have 6-8K to spend, no problem.

Vanbroj, I was just recalling in a previous thread you said you had a vg8 1916 slq. Did you sell that one?

Thanks All,
It is really nice to get all the helpful feedback.
I do presently own a Anacs vg8.
Greysheet bid is 4750 and I had a local dealer offer me 4550.
I was hoping to sell my coin to him and pick up a Solid slabbed G4
and use the money in the differance for another need that I have.
Johnny that is a nice coin. My opinion is that the reverse is a vg8
and it would have been nice if that would have pulled the overall grade up to a G6
I have checked around on the internet and 1916 SLQ really seem overpriced relative to the greysheet.
Rest in Peace

Thanks Vanbroj! One thing that I've noticed is that lately the TPGs seem to be a lot tougher on these. The one I posted actually initially only graded AG3 at ANACS, which left me aghast so I sent it in again and got the 4(this was just a couple of months ago). I agree that it is comparitive to many PCGS G6s that I've seen in the past, and it could have made an 8 if the date were stronger. So in looking for a nice G4, I think you'd have a better chance of finding a strong one in a more recent TPG slab, that's just my subjective opinion though. I think it will be tough to find any though for under $2600.
