I have posted this dime before, but as I was examining the coin, I noticed something funny with the "S" in "States." I believe it may have been caused by overly polishing the die, but it's a really cool looking error as the "S" is broken and separated. Let me know what you guys think.

Nice! I'm going to have to wait to hear an answer from an expert, but I have a question. The O in OF seems to have almost the same thing, a missing top. Is it completely open or is a small line left?

I've seen this on other coins, but I can't remember the cause.

I have an IHC from 1882 that used a broken date punch The 2 in the date looks a lot like this S. It's such an abrupt break, different from a filled die.

And look--there are several "broken S" varieties for 1877; scroll down to F-102-F104,F-109

I believe that is called a Hub Break.
The Official Price Guide to Mint Error '7th edition' page 149 show a sample of it.

Bingo, hub break. Commonly seen on the D in UNITED on Two Cent Pieces, 1860 - 73 Half Dimes and very common on several different letters on the reverses of Shield nickels. Especially on the 1868 hub of 68 reverse where there may be as many as six letters showing hub breaks.

Thank you all. I was wondering about that error on several of my Liberty Seated dimes.
