I belong to the novice category of coin collectors and I need your opinion about some books that can teach me how to grade, correctly, coins. I also need some trustworthy online coin shops to look for coins until I can grade and buy what I think is worth my money.

Thank you.

I have a copy of ' ANA Grading Standards for United States coins' by Ken Bressert that I really like.
'Photograde: Official Photographic Grading Guide for ,United States Coins, 19th Edition' by Ruddy is another, neither very expensive.

Another suggestion; find a local coin show near you, on the Internet, and look for a table that sells supplies, albums, flips, stuff like that. There's usually at least one at any show, and I've found them to give reasonable discounts off the cover price...

The "for United States coins" part troubles me. Do I have to have US coins so I can practice on them according to the books instructions?

Try your post under...
World Coins and Currency Discussion Forums
World Coins and Commemoratives
World Coin Grading
You could also look through threads under that topic, plus you might also find resources on the Internet, and coin shows would still be a good alternative

I just did a quick Google search using a couple different search terms, and unfortunately, nothing like what your asking about came up. There are numerous reference books on world coins, including some country-specific. Nothing, however, on grading. I would venture to say that, as far as the above mentioned books, they are both great references for grading US coins. US coinage is standard, and the grading guidelines are geared toward those. The ANA Standards are the accepted means of grading coins in the US, and these were written by (for lack of a better term) a governing body in American Numismatics. When you talk about foreign coins, the standards will vary widely from country to country. The Euro only includes a small percentage of the countries in the world. Everybody else does what they think best. So one single reference that provides grading standards for all foreign coins would be quite an extensive set of books. Even finding grading guidelines for an individual country's coins would be quite a challenge.

I am so glad that you asked this question. Since I am new to coin collected I would like to know everything I can before I spend a lot of money.
