Hi Guys,

I have an Irish James II Gunmoney sixpence dated Jan 1689. Can can find coins minted in other months but not January. Can someone please confirm they were minted with a Jan 1689 date or whether mine is a fake or replica piece.

I have a Jan 1689 gunmoney coin (a shilling, I think). As I understand it, gunmoney of all denominations were issued throughout the period June 1689 to October 1690.

But hang on - Jan 1689 is before that, isn't it? Well, no. IIRC, in those days, years were reckoned from equinox to equinox, so Jan 1689 followed straight after Dec 1689, and March 1689 and March 1690 are actually the same month.

There was a good article on this in an old CAB or ACR magazine. I'll see if I can find the reference.

OK, in the 1600's Krause, the gunmoney 6d is listed, Ireland KM#93. There are listings for June through to Feb 1689, and then May 1690. The Jan 1689 type isn't given any higher value than any of the other months.

The only sixpence with a higher price than the others is the September 1689 variety where it's spelled "7ber".

I have tried repeatedly to grab some "gun money" on ebay but with no luck. Seems there are quite a few other collectors in the world interested in the coins history as well! I will just keep trying!
