What is out there for coins? One of my coworkers is going to show me some old dollar coins passed on from his grandparents I believe. First presumption was Morgan dollars but I shall find out today. Anyhow, what is the proper way to ensure they're genuine without insulting him? I already sense they are genuine coins but I feel it's always good to be sure.

One of the quickest and easiest things to do is weigh them, if they are the proper size and weight, they will at least be made out of silver.

And check weight against thickness too. Copies using lighter alloys will sometimes be thicker to hide the discrepancy; I have seen this on Morgan $.

Sometimes the best way to spot a counterfeit is to know what the real thing is supposed to look like. The secret service uses this technique. All they study is real money so they can spot a fake very easily.

I've been in retail sales for over 10 years and I've used those pens...they don't work. I have to go by experience to spot fakes.

And you can always post pictures here and we'll tell you

Years of experience looking at the real thing. Sure there are other tests, weight, measurement, specific gravity, xray re-emission analysis, but all those take time and/or money and none of them by themselves is a surefire foolproof method. A good struck fake on the proper weight and alloy planchet would pass all of them and still be fake, but could be caught by an experienced observer.
