The very last window on the tour overlooks the room where they produce medals and oversized stuff. It was early (9:15-ish), so they weren't in full swing yet, but I saw a table with a couple of trays of Mount Hood 5-ounce pucks.

And for the record, if you show up at opening time on Wednesday, it seems you have the whole place to yourself.

Been planning a trip there in the Fall, when it cools off a bit. Did you enjoy the tour? I'm guessing lots of security, and no samples, but maybe a small gift shop? I did a family trip to the Bureau of Engraving in D.C. some years ago, and I remember them selling small uncut sheets (4 bills) in folders that document the facts about the particular denominations. Can you take pics?

I would love to tour a mint. How was the experience?

The Philly mint is a self tour and they do have a small gift shop. Security is high but not too bad, empty your pockets and go through a metal scanner. Street parking can be hard to find. Late spring and early summer you run into many children on school trips.

Yes, they sell anything that's been released and not sold out and subject to household minimums. Both Denver & Philly gift shop staff are really knowledgeable and let you pick and choose among several specimens of a particular coin you'd like to buy. Bring a loupe if you intend to submit a coin later for MS or PR70.

Security wasn't bad... they warn you about photos -- they can confiscate your camera and charge you criminally. The "tour" is walking down and back a looooooong hallway. You walk past 5 or 6 windows where you see rolls of metal being punched into blanks, then those blanks being carried in hoppers through the minting process.

I was there right when the opened at 9:00, and felt like I would have seen more production going on if I'd been later, but I had the halls to myself.

The gift shop is pretty good. They do sell most of the mint products & lots of medals. And there is a change machine that give you the latest ATB Quarters.
