I just discovered that I have two $1 bank notes. They are silver certificates, series 1957 A. I would guess they would be considered fine.

I have never ever sold one of my coins or banknotes. I'm just interested in finding if these have any value above face value?

Thanks for any help.

Hi Gary, the 1957A Silver Certs are ultra common, the price guides I have only go down to VF on them, @ $3. It was a few silver certificates laying in a drawer that got me started branching out into currency, though, it seems just as fascinating as coins to me, though I've only been into currency for about a year vs 50 years for coins

fastfords1, We seem to have a lot in common. I also have collected coins for 50 years, but am becoming interested in notes. My daughter gave me a 1917 $20 note a year or so ago, and I have two others of the same time period. Also have some foreign stuff as well as notes Scoutjim was kind enough to send me.

On trips to Europe, Mexico, Belize, Cayman Islands, and The Bahamas, I have picked up a few notes, and enjoy getting them out and looking them over.

Thanks to you all for the information regarding my silver certificates.

Hi Gary, I've developed quite an interest in currency, (USA) it actively competes for my coin budget!!! I have a good start on FRN and silver certs, a nearly complete US Note set, lots of large size with the gorgeous artwork, a smattering of fractionals, and even some colonials.
One of the most interesting is a United States note for $55, which reads"The Bearer is entitled to receive Fifty five Spanish Milled Dollars, or an equal sum in Gold or Silver according to a Resolution of CONGRESS of the 14th January 1779."

We talk about the history of our coins, but the currency is at least as interesting.

I have found a lot of tremendous good buys at coin shows, a lot of dealers have currency on the side of the table which they have accumulated as part of coin buys, and often are willing to sell it cheap (sometime in bulk bag or box style) just to get rid of it!!! I have a pile of world currency from odd sources like that which I haven't done much with.

The ANA has some excellent books in their online bookstore...

The only other currency I focus on is French Indochina and South Viet Nam...Very colorful, not too expensive when you can find it.

I suppose the message is, Keep an eye out for that currency while pursuing the coins...

All the best,,,Dennis

My dealer bought a whole stack of silver certificates today. Only one star note in the bunch but there were 3 "funny backs" and one Hawaian note in the bunch. He sure didn't give a whole lot for the silver certificates other than the funny backs and the Hawaian note. All were circulated notes!

fastfords1, Thanks for all the good information. I appreciate it.

The best note I've seen is one my coin dealer has, and won't part with. It's a note from the 1920's issued by The Bank of Paonia, which is a small community just 30 miles from where I live.

If he ever wants to part with it, I would sure like to have it.

I am becoming more and more fascinated with paper money, and as soon as I save up some money I will be looking to buy some older US notes.
