Which coins do you like? Some people like looking through rolls of pennies, others prefer nickels, dimes or quarters. Just depends on which is the most appealing to you. I like to have some variety, so I have a few of several different coins in circulation. Other people like to stick to one type and try to find many years as possible.

Also, if you click on US coin history on the left, it'll give you a pretty good idea of what coins are out there. They all have photo's, so you can look through them and see which ones you'd like to try to find.

It depends on what you're looking for. If you want to get lots of "keepers", pennies probably have the most, because you can easily get a dozen or more wheat cents per box. Pennies are also good if you like to collect errors or varieties. If you're going for silver, half dollars are a good bet, followed by dimes. If you want to complete a set of coins from circulation, nickels are your best bet (though halves are pretty easy from circulation too). I like Nickels the best, because you have a little bit of everything, collecting Jeffeersons, silver War Nickels, old Buffalo nickels, and some varieties and errors too, and there's usually a couple keepers in pretty much every box.

Have you considered State Quarters or Lincoln cents? I also second the recommendation of Jefferson nickels, you can build a nice collection without spending too much money.

I aggree. Build a collection of what is interesting to you. In my case, I started with Lincoln cents and Buffalo nickels in the 70s. Now I collect President dollars, State and Park quarters, because that is what I can get in change, or rolls. Working on Indian Head cents now! Have fun!

You should look into purchasing a Red Book by Whitman Publishing. It shows all the USA coins past and present so you could get a better idea of what is out there, what grades to look for, what Mints to look for, etc. Asking for rolls that people bring into a bank is silly. In most instances those have been looked through over and over and over. Today so many do the roll searching thing, the ones you get from a bank are just that. You should start out by asking friends, neighbors, relatives if they have any old coins. Also, check to see if there are any flea markets in your area and go there looking for coins. Same with possible coin shows.
