Dear Krause Publications:

Please consider removing all the NCLT (non circulating legal tender) pseudo-coins (really just art pieces or bullion) from your world coin catalog and putting them in a separate "bullion" collectors catalog. See how many you will sell!

Make the coin catalogs for the coin collectors. I'm looking at my old 23rd edition where the coins went from 1800-1996 in one volume. You could do that again.

Why does the IOM need 12 pages of NCLT? One example out of many. I'm a coin collector who likes to carry around his book. Sure I guess I could buy the CD/DVD and print out the pages, but wwhy should I.

Do the right thing Krause.

Those "giant" Krause books that include all sorts of collector coins and pseudo pieces make a lot of sense for those who collect by theme, for example, or coins from a group of countries, etc. If you want a catalog that covers the "regular" pieces only, have you tried their "Circulating Issues" catalog? See here http://www.amazon.com/Collecting-Wo...p/1440215561 for example. That one (13th ed. 2011) would probably make more sense for you.

Wow! Glad I don't have to send my letter to Krause. The catalog has been there all the time. I'm trying to figure out how I missed it and I can only come up with thinking it was more of a "How To" book (Collecting Coins) rather than a catalog. This is why I reach out to my numismatic friends. Thank you again Christian.

There are two sides to this question.

Some collectors prefer to find in one location ALL of the coins ever made including the non-circulating types. This makes sense as an office reference but is cumbersome to lug around to shows.

Others prefer TOPICAL books - Circulating - Non-Circulating and Unusual are three categories. Then there are Tokens, Medals etc.

The book Kopper Ken cites is a good idea but it is not a complete solution - it covers only coins dated after 1901 so it is itself some what limited.

What would be the perfect book for all purposes? Perhaps an electronic book that has EVERYTING COIN, MEDAL, TOKEN and COUNTERFEIT EVER MADE arranged alphabetically by country that is searchable by date, denomination or legend. It would be small - complete and expensive.

But it would have one big disadvantage for Krause.

It would put their publishing wing out of business...

I hate to buy multiple books because they are too expensive so keeping the NCLT coins in there is FANTASTIC especially for us OFEC collectors. I hate that they have split some into the "Unusual' catalog. that is just another 50 bucks to lay out.

both books are good references, the collector's circulating coins only & the world book w/NCLTs. As an OFEC collector collecting only silver in crown size, NCLTs are fillers for a country which never had a crown silver, it somewhat helps

I think that there are NCLT collectors and those who don't. I don't collect NCLT's
The NCLT collectors also collect circualtion coins.

This is a situation that KP has to make a commercial decision on: what to include and what to separate out for a separate publication. Ultimately, profitability for KP is what drives their decision.

Personally, I agree with Kopper Ken, but there is a large body of opinion that is different to ours.

Most Mints around the World are currently issuing far more types of NCLT than they issuing circulating types, and there is a large grey area where some coin types are issued in many forms, some for circulation, and some not for circulation. That makes the decision for KP even harder.
