I'm interested in learning about the history of money, coins, bills and the rise of monetary systems.
Does anyone have a suggestion of a good book that would cover this?

I believe I had a copy of "A History of Money: From Ancient Times to the Present Day" by Glyn Davies. I've since sold it on, but it was interesting enough, outlining the various coinages and monetary systems of the ancient, mediaeval and modern times.

It may not be quite what you're looking for, but "The Coin Atlas" by Cribb and Carradice is an excellent country-by-country breakdown of the history of coinage used in each country's territory.

Another great book just on the history of money in the United States is, "A History of Money and Banking in the United States the Colonial Era to World War II" by Murray N. Rothbard. ISBN# 9780945466338. This is a great book that gives a lot of detail about history, laws that have changed the monetary system, and the power of specie. It also talks a lot about Gresham's Law. Not sure if you are looking into the U.S. side, but this is a great book if you get a chance after reading the books that Sap has mentioned.

The Glyn Davis book looks like a great place to start, then I'll check out the others after.
Thanks Sap & mmorgan22.

Read the Glyn Davis book...whoa, that was a little too much info, but I made it through. Also the book was very UK focused and too detailed for my likes, but I stuck with it...I'm certainly much more knowledgeable about banking...but I was hoping to be more knowledgeable about coins.

Thanks for the recommendation though.

I need to keep looking for something about the history of money and coins from a more social/historical perspective, not so much the gritty details of how many coins were struck in 731 AD and how many banking transactions there were in 1931.
