Quote: Cant wait to compare people numbers and average finds per region ! that was my main point of wanting the site. you can see other people's averages and their finds and compare to your own. to see how hard or easy it is to get certain coins.

Besides wheats, rare dates and silvers what is everyone keeping? how do you "get rid of" the searched "left overs"?

They go back to a DIFFERENT bank. Don't dump where you eat.

You know, I read this philosophy before I started roll searching. and I still don't understand the logic behind it... my bank, where I am a customer, is totally cool with my roll searching... I basically do a box (of pennies) a week, and I simply swap my old box for a new box, no problems. And there is no chance of getting my searched pennies back, as my new boxes are sealed. Les

merclover, your bank sends out the coins to a company such as Dunbar or Brinks where they reroll them and send them back to banks that deal with them. If you dump at the same bank you get your boxes from there is a chance you can receive the same coins again. If you take them to a different bank using a different company there is no chance that this will occur.

No, my bank told me the coins I re-roll will just go out to one of the many local business in the immediate area, literally right across the street from the bank. Seems in my neighbourhood I'm the only penny roll searcher. Plus, I'm in an area with about a dozen different banks and credit unions in a small area, and they are all serviced by Brinks, so I'm told, so I'm not worried about seeing the same coins again. Les

Ahh! You re-roll them yourself. It makes sense to me now. I thought you put them into a coin counter. Thanks for the heads up murrellington.

Yep, I re-roll them myself. My bank even gives me the coin wrappers for free! Since I only search about a box of pennies a week, re-rolling them is really no big deal. Plus, the bank is really nice about it.

Ditto. I normally do one box, sometimes two, and of various denominations. However, recently I have been roll searching half dollars. When checking for errors and varieties, I began marking the pick up points, and tossing them back in to get re-rolled. Then a few boxes latter, some of those same coins started to pop up in one of the boxes I got. So I was getting some of mine back, but in one roll, there was a coin with my mark on it and the next was a 40% silver. So I did get some back, but they had been mixed up with others. And I have only had that one box with mine in it. But then again, I quit looking for varieties and errors too. Quote: Yep, I re-roll them myself. My bank even gives me the coin wrappers for free! Ditto again. I've always re-rolled and they've always supplied the wrappers. That is until recently. I've always had a good rapport with the vault manager, (I'll call her Judy to make things simpler), and she knows I collect and we discuss my progress each time I visit. I had informed her that I am searching halves and am trying to put together a set from circulation before the silver miners make that impossible. So far as I can tell they have succeeded. Still need a 64D. Anyways I figured I needed to search more than one box a week so I asked if I could start bagging instead of re-rolling. She said sure and even would give me the bags. I then started to order two boxes a week and was going through those fairly quickly, not having to re-roll and not looking for errors and varieties anymore sure sped things up. So comes Friday, my swap day, two weeks ago, after I tell Judy I would like to increase my order to four boxes, she tells me she can no longer supply the bags and that I will have to re-roll again. So I re-rolled the two boxes I had got, it went quick, and went to swap them the next Friday. When I got there I asked Judy that seen as how I can't get bags, if it would be okay if I could just put them back in the boxes and tape them instead of re-rolling? She said nope. So I got the four boxes I ordered and then asked her for some more wrappers. She looked in the cabinets behind here and then went to a storage room. She came back and told me they didn't have anymore wrappers, and she can't give me any bags! She told me then to go ahead and just put them in the box and don't worry about re-rolling them. I need to put her on my Christmas list.

I remember reading about this practice in the roll searching halves thread, and I was so disgusted with the thought of it that I wanted to distance myself as much as possible from those "collectors" who placed "their mark" on coins that they have passed on. Sure, it's "just" ink, but it requires some rubbing effort to remove it... your "throw aways" might be someone else's prizes gems some day. Marking coins is a selfish practice and a deal stopper for me I'm afraid, and shouldn't be encouraged. Les
