I recently purchased from a large dealer on ebay, a George Washington Carver 50 cent 1947 commerative, slabbed and graded MS-65 by PCI. The picture in the listing was poor in quality and when I received the coin there were on the obverse, three deep bag marks, two on the cheek and one on the forehead. In my experience PCGS would have graded this coin at no more than a MS-61 (sorry it is in my bank box so I don't have a picture). Anyone else have experience with PCI and would care to comment? David Travers does not even acknowledge their exsistence in the Coin Collectors Survival Manual?

Colin

I have had some success in crossing PCI coins over to PCGS slab's but it was in the old green label PCI slabs, I have never tried to cross any in the newer slab's (gold colored I think) but I am sure there are some that are graded correctly. I don't think a PCI graded coin would be a full 4 points off but I have seen stranger things happen so I can't say in this particular case without seeing a picture of the coin in question
Rest in Peace

I've not had much luck with PCI slabbed coins although I have not purchased very many. In some instances, their grades have been spot-on, but generally, they overgrade by one to three (now make that four?) grades. Worse, their reputation upon reselling in the same slabs is terrible, even if the grade is accurate. A PCI slab is the kiss of death for resale. A buyer or seller needs to treat a PCI slab as a raw coin and bid/sell accordingly.

The 2004 PNG/ICTA Survey of TPGs puts PCI near or at the bottom of the rated TPGs. http://www.pngdealers.com/public/Su...4_detail.cfm
