Hmm.... The toning seems a little odd on this one.

The person I purchased it from gave me a 100% moneyback guarantee and told me that it was from an estate sale where it had been stored in the basement for forty plus years? Also the field and face are almost flawless for the price I gave for it I can't see why anyone would go to the trouble of altering it. Besides heating it, which I see no obvious signs of, what else could be done to a coint to create this type of toning? Again thanks for your thoughts.

Sellers alway claim that coins come from estate sales, that way if you are not happy with a coin they can claim 'well, I didn't do it.'
I'm not really sure, however from the pics it looks like the coin may have been cleaned. And the toning is definitely artificial...probably heat. My suggestion to you would be to send it to ANACS and find out for yourself. Or send it back to the seller.

really bad artificial toning(AT)
AT can be induced through heating and also the use of chemical accelerants.

The reason for the the AT could be to try and hide a old cleaning. The other reason is some people will pay premiums for natural toned coins that are pretty. I have a few that I bought of ebay back in 1998 that appear to have had a torch job.. I like toning so I buy alot of toned coins. The only time I will pay a premium for a toned coin it needs to be graded by the big 3. Is your coin in a graded slab?

Well I looked very closely at it to see if I could see any visible scratches from cleaning which I didn't see. The coin is not slabbed also the gold tone on the reverse isn't as bold as the pic appears I think the poor lighting may have had a little to do with it. Either way I really didn't spend to much of a premium for it and like you I think the toning looks pretty nice. I'm guessing that by the time I decide to get rid of it I should be able to make a slight profit. At least I hope so anyway.

What is the seller ID? I have an idea of who it might be. This is definitely artificially toned though, no question about it. It may not be cleaned depending on how it looks in person, but it might instead be dipped. And the seller is a liar if they said its been stored in a basement for 40 years, by the way.

Yea thats AT all the way. Looks like a chemical tone to me. But if you like it thats all that matters. If you got it for cheap and like it, then keep it. But if you paid a lot, send it back in a flash!

I can't see natural toning to be so VIBRANT in only a few spots areas...I love the ESTATE thing...I have no responsibillity...you gotta love the artistic nature of a blow torch..

Shadow the ID was bobondo and I saw he had another on there last night except this time the one he was selling was had 24 bidders and again he came up with an off the wall story as to how it became so toned. here is the link. 1880 Morgan dollar RARE TONED (OLD COLLECTION) I reported it to ebay as a fraudulent listing. I do think it looks cool but don't like the fact that he isn't being honest about how it got that way as a matter of fact he is blatently lying. I didn't give as much for mine as this person, did and am sure I could re-sell it on ebay as quickly as I purchased it but I wont list it as naturally toned, thats just wrong!

I agree with everyone else. Undoubtedly artificially toned. The coin in the link you gave is also undoubtedly AT. There are a few sellers like this, you got to really watch out for. I would return the coin.

From his ebay ad: Quote: THE DARK COINS I'LL CLEAN OR DIP & NOTE IT IN DESCRIPTION. This tells me he's not a true numismatist and is only in it for the money. He's found he can get significantly more for a coin that is toned (however it gets toned doesn't matter to him) than an untouched one. Recommendation: Avoid.

yeah I already sent it back! I've been watching him and he has at least one or two similar looking "TONED" coins listed every day I'm on a mission now just keep reporting them as a fraudulent listing. Maybe ebay will notify him or remove listings but nothing so far. He just keeps putting them up and people keep bidding them up!
