This at one time was a pocket piece for me is it worth any more than melt?

Put it inside a tight fitting clear plastic pocket to protect it from further damage, and continue to have it as a pocket piece. Nice coin for such an adventure.

Bit heavy, though. Just make sure that it does not go through the washing machine!

My idea of an ideal American pocket piece would be a common date walker in about MS60. Bit lighter and not so risky, value wise. And more old folk would remember what it is when you show it. Ab. fab. neo classic design as well.

No one would recognise the gold coin, if they noticed any of my change it would be a silver dollar.
Rest in Peace

Double eagle as pocket piece = AWESOME! Good for you, you're bold my friend! I considered doing this with a half eagle, but chickened out(for fear of losing it). I'd grade it AU-50. It should bring a small premium, probably 5-8%.

The marks and such bring it down to EF-40. It's still gold, and it's still nice! I think that it will bring a 3 to 5% or so premium over melt, as Commercial Uncirculated pieces are only bringing about 10% or even less over melt.
