Hello found a person selling this Trade dollar. He doesn't list a price just says will take reasonable offer. I've still got a lot to learn with these so any advice or help will be greatly appreciated. Is it real? Or its real, just really fake? LOL And if real what would be a good price to offer. Its listed as EF, Does the CC M/M add a premium as it does with Morgans. Thanks for your time. And help. Heres the coin. It looks cleaned to me. Edited by amassey08873 07/20/2011 09:26 am

CC's are highly desirable on ALL U.S. coinage, Trade dollars are no exception. However, many members justifiably so indicate that Trade dollars are among (if not) the most counterfeited U.S. coins in the world, especially since they were intentionally meant for trade in the Orient back when they were originally produced. Buyer beware! I would look elsewhere, and pick up a certified Trade dollar from one of the Top Three Third Party Certifiers.

Thanks oih82w8, yea these are probably the most counterfeited. Its just if this were sitting in a slab, I couldn't afford it. I know this opens me up to buy an expensive paper weight. And normally I wouldn't even consider it being I haven't had much experience with them. But I stumbled upon it, And if I can add one to my collection for a decent price. I've got to take the chance. Being hes asking for offers could mean its fake and doesn't want to imply anything. Or it could be a hand me down or inheritance and is not aware of the value. Don't get me wrong, I'm not looking to Rob him. Just save a few bucks.

I can certainly relate to your financial situation, just about everybody is in that boat. Look at it this way; if you like it, buy it. You only have to satisfy one person; you. Then again, you only have one person to blame if you are not happy with your purchase; you. When making any purchase, ensure that there is a return policy. If there is a "No Return" policy, run! Most honest sellers would take it back if you are not satisfied. Success!

An XF-40 1876-CC Trade dollar in a slab is a $900 coin. The mint mark adds considerable value. Are you ready to risk that kind of money on a coin which was counterfeited literally from the day it hit the streets? The photos are not sufficient to either grade or determine authenticity. Trade dollars are one series I would not venture to buy raw unless I were perfectly capable of authenticating it myself, in-hand, which means I'd never buy a raw Trade dollar.

Just throwing this out there for ya.. I have two listed on ebay at the moment (75S & 77S). The 77S was in my Type Set but I've upgraded and am selling it. One ends tomorrow and the other on Friday. I have had them in hand and guarantee them to be genuine. Don't know if I'm doing a "no no" by promoting them here, but I'm trying to help you with your dilema.... Paleoguy45

Yea its tough on this side, I thank you all for your advise. I've been very lucky so far, well guess you wouldn't call it luck cause of all the work and fun that goes into my collection. Darn it, I was hoping to find some examples in Making the Grade. But I couldn't find any. Time to look a little further into it. Once again thanks for all the advise. Anyone have any thoughts on her face. And I remember reading about a fold line or crease around the edge that will be a tell if its fake or not. I'm not positive but I think I see something on the obverse rim 12 to 3. Is that normal. I know its asking a lot from the pics provided. I'll see what I can do with getting some more.

As a general rule, any Trade dollar listed at a bargain price relative to its PCGS or NGC value is fake.
