I bought some NFLD coins in the last few weeks and one gave me a smile. I bought it, paid for it, got confirmation of shipping and three days later the seller dropped me an email. It ended cryptically: "I guess you won the lottery!" Well, maybe. Maybe not. I did a bit of sleuthing and settled the matter. Anyway, can you see what ignited the email she sent and what my sleuthing likely produced? Another day riding the ebay train. Always something bumping in the aisles! Here are the two pics from the listing.

Is it the 1870 NF2 (not Known to exist)?

Hmmm, you're on an interesting path. So what's next do you think?

The C in Cent also looks to be doubled. Not being a Newfoundland collecter I'm just guessing

NOT too sure about this but I thought the Newfie 5 cent did not have the mint mark under the bust until 1872-1876.

I agree with neweden. I don't think it's possible that this coin could have that obverse. Maybe the seller just accidentally used the pictures of a 10 cent Newfie coin with the H by accident...

I think there is a 'missing' dot somewhere.

Nickelsguy brings up a good point, from the posted pictures. Unless the 2x2's have been swapped to house a singular coin, that coin is not what it purports to be, just from that alone. I won't go into the H mintmark, or the 2-3 obverse varities {although the 1870 only lists 1 and 2}

Nickelsguy gets a prize. Great eye! After I received the email I initially missed the difference in the folder size profile and I went to work. I could see why the seller thought she'd sold me a rare coin. But the rare obverse shouldn't have had any dots at all around Newfoundland. I looked at other coins I'd bought at the same time from her and quickly discovered she'd included the obverse pic from an 1872 NFLD dime with the 1870 reverse. Oh, I thought I was rich for about five minutes. And then it all fell apart. Well done, all participants!

So since you aren't going to receive the actual coin you bid on and won, offically it was misrepresented and you would have grounds to return it, yes? Are you happy with your purchase anyway?

I don't have it yet. I'm just hoping it's acceptable. The purchase price was very reasonable and since I had great deals on the others I purchased from her I'm not feeling too anxious about it all.
