I would like to store my coins for the time being.

Are there any recommendations?

Thanks.

Hi Sponge, a lot depends on what type of coins you are talking about. Are they slabbed, in 2 x 2s, albums? Are you talking long term storage, months, years? Some general rules of thumb are 1)keep the in a dry, climate controlled environment 2)Be sure they are in coin friendly holders, no pcv or other types of holders that could cause harm long term. Some albums are better than others etc. 3)try to keep them in an airtite container 4)Make sure they are in a safe place-safety deposit box, safe in your home. Again, a lot depends on your specific situation and I am sure others will help with more advice as well.

Sponge, yes I that a dry place at room temperature is ideal.

A few general considerations:

1) Well protected from air. Multiple layers of protection, i.e. holders, tubes, airtites >> heavy plastic bags >> tupperware type container. Use at least ALL three layers or even more. Mo layers = Mo betta
2) Store in a cool, dry area that doesn't have wide temperature flucutions. Wide swings cause the moisture/air to condense/compress which make a dynamic, damaging environment.
3) Inside the bags use desiccant packs and bright, red cents to absorb moisture and air borne contaminants.

Hi Brad, never heard the bright red cent idea before. I am guessing they would attract any contaminants before other coins?

It's THAD....lol

Yes, adding a bright, red, copper cent (I like to harshly clean them with steel wool) to the bag acts as a scrificial metal. Any gases like hydrogen sulfide that find their way into the bag should be absorbed by the cent. It's the same concept as the Intercept Shield holders....except cheaper. LOL

No fair, I wanted to make that offer.
So much depends on for how long, how many, what type of holders they are in if any, what type of coins, etc.
If rare coins that is one thing. If just ordinary coins, possibly sell and restart later. Safe deposit boxes are great but in almost all states, you have to pay each year so that is something to consider. If you don't, they will eventually open them.
For the average coin collection I'd say wrap them all up really good and have a relative hold on to them.
