Hello Matthias,
I live in Ilford, which is near London. The first 16 Olympic 50p (dated 2011) were circulated as ordinary coins just before Christmas 2010. I haven't seen any in circulation recently, probably all hoarded by children. A few are on ebay (UK).
If you wish, you can see the mintage figures here:- http://www.royalmint.com/Corporate/...g_coins.aspx which is part of The Royal Mint website. In England, some collectors are refusing to buy from The Royal Mint because the prices are too high.
It has been suggested (unofficially, but by one of the designers) that there will be 3-million of each of 29 designs circulated. We think that some more will appear just before this Christmas when shops call for more coins. Will some show 2012?
Every Saturday there is a coin fair in a car park outside Embankment underground station which is near Charing Cross. I haven't been there yet - I must try to wake up earlier one Saturday!
Enjoy your visit,
Bill.
