It's official, there will be a new country to add to the list for collecting, for both coin and note collectors.

The Banknotes have already been issued, they appear by their security features and layout to have been produced by De La Rue. Coins will be released as soon as enough have been minted to meet commercial demand, I am not sure yet of who is in charge of their production or how they will look.

All pound denominations will be in notes (1, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100), while all piastres (1, 5, 25, 50) will be in coin. The new currency trades with the N. Sudanese Pound at par, at least for the time being.

So far, the notes look crisp and nice, my only quarrel with them being that the 10 and 100 are both in the same color, blue. I think the 100 should have in something unmistakable like bright orange on yellow with a different security threading.

If anyone knows the date of the coin release or what they may look like, I would be most interested.

1:1 with the N Sudan pound. Not sure how that corresponds to the Euro or any other currency though.

Thanks Harrison! :)

This is an interesting article, Enlil. It appears the north will be keeping to the Arabic script while the South will be using Latin instead...interesting. Very much like many former Soviet states did shortly after declaring their independence from Russia.
