Wow, can't wait to come across those.
The new symbol for the rupee, is it Hindi or what?
Will they be issued by various mints (as normal), Mumbai, Kolkota, Noida, Hyderabad and/or any foreign mints?
Also the 10 rupee looks bi-metallic can you confirm?

Excellent. Speedy reply. So if each mint issues each value coin every year that's 20 new coins every year (if you're fanatical enough)!

Been reading a load of posts about this on another forum and the Indians seemed to think the coins are a load of rubbish. I would have to agree. I think coins which are unimaginative are just plain boring, I'd include chinese, hong kongese coins in this list too.

Though it serves the purpose of creating a coin for less than the price of the coin, I think there is nothing cool or even nice about these coins. I like the coins issued before much more than these coins.

Let's compare these with US coins. Here's the cost of Producing the Penny, Nickel, Dime, Quarter, Half-dollar and Golden Dollar Coins.

Golden Dollar Half Dollar Quarter Dime Nickel Penny
21.14 cents 16.97 cents 7.33 cents 3.14 cents 4.56 cents .93 cents
(United States Mint, 2004 Annual Report, pg. 45)

Considering the manufacturing and engraving cost is much lower in India, is this the best the mint can do to create a coin for less than the tender of the coin? Probably not.

Rs 1 - Compare to a Cent?
Rs 2 - Compare to a Nickel?
Rs 5 - Compare to a US Dime
Rs 10- Compare to a Quarter

Whether one thinks they are boring/unimaginative or not they are still new designs and will be of interest to a lot of collectors (including myself).
