The MINT has already announced the new dollars will be in the proof and mint sets as new holders are already being designed to hold them. They are NOT about to pass up the opportunity to get deeper into our wallets and the mint and proof sets are supposed to hold every coin made for circulation each year. The proof sets should NOT be delayed because of the new dollars as the current Statehood Quarters do not delay them. Actually the mint will make more money by getting the proofs and mints into circulation quickly so the masses can see what is coming and the hype will build by word of mouth.

While the design looks rather bland (IMHO) it is what it is. I agree with Gary about the "Dead Presidents" and have no problems with having our former Presidents on a coin series. In fact, I find it appropriate. That ofcourse, is speaking from an Historical viewpoint. I don't understand why the First Ladies are Gold however. I think that from a Numismactic standpoint the Presidents should be in Gold and the First Ladies (if minted at all) should be in a lesser metal. From a Collectors view (the Presidents) will be more attractive and affordable with those that just pick them up to collect the series like the Quarters are now. I, for one, will be collecting the Presidents Series but, will probably not collect the First Ladies unless they can make Eleanor attractive

I thought of something interesting. I thought a living president cannot be on any coins or currency. What happens when they get to Ford, Bush Sr, Clinton, and Bush Jr?

A president will have to be dead for two years to get a coin. Ford will be dead by then(93), Carter(82) and GHWB(82) probably wont be around, so that will leave Clinton, GWB, and whomever occupies the Oval Office between now and then- they will be the ones left out.

I see absolutely nothing "educational" about these coins, as they give no information about the president other than his tenure in office. Just watch a Jay Leno "Jaywalking" segment to discover how ignorant the American public is of even the most elementary facts of American history. A lawyer "colleague" of mine (of sorts) had absolutely no idea of the dates of the Civil War --- after all, he wasn't a history major. If American kids are too busy playing video games and holding cell phones to their ears instead of learning who's who of American presidents in school (after all, it may take some READING), they sure are not going to about the American presidents in a "dumbed down" lesson on coins.

I have to admit I am a history buff but I don't think these coins will teach anyone anything at all. They have books 13 years of their lives that have the same pictures in it and if they didn't learn about them then they sure as heck aint gonna learn anything about a peice of metal they carry around, all they will learn is that no matter who is on the front they are all worth the same

houston_guy462004, You are probably correct on the lack of educational value. However, my thinking is that the coins might stimulate some people to dig a little bit to find out more about a President they see on a coin. I've talked to dozens of people who say they didn't care for history in middle school and high school, but now as adults they are finding it fascinating. So, I think the coins may serve as a stimulus for some to learn more about their history.

A series of coins on famous Americans who actually DID something would have been far more interesting. Next, in my mind, a series on U.S. wildlife as Canada has made millions off of theirs and they are about as politically correct as you can get! No politics involved. Just think of how many coins could have been created just from the taming of the West! Now those folks actually DID something and like it or not a HUGE number of our Presidents were down right boring and when you do get to a great one you still have to work through the power, greed and corruption to find one. NO dead Presidents for me as I have had enough of the ones we have had to look at all of our lives and the ones we have been constantly forced fed forever. We have much much more history and interesting characters in this countries history to teach the world!

Thanks, DJ, I appreciate your offer. I'll be we can figure out a way to help each other if it comes to that. If I am able to get them here, they'll probably be P's.
Now, fellas, tell me -- WHICH banks do you guys get new coins from? I have called every bank in town, and they all say they don't get new rolls of coins. Which is absurd, because on occasion, when getting quarters from the bank for change for the charity rummage sale, I've gotten rolls of brand-new quarters. But when I call them, they admit to nothing.
What I wanted to do was establish a relationship with a bank, but I keep getting the cold shoulder. I live near Lansing, MI, which is not the Big Apple, but it isn't Palookaville either. You'd think some bank would be happy to deal with me.
So, what am I doing wrong?

crystalk64 - You are right. It would make more sense to commemorate Americans who actually did something. What did Millard Fillmore actually do, other than to be an ancestor of Barbara Bush? Or Franklin Pierce, or Martin Van Buren? It caters to the puerile notion of "Gee, some day I want to grow up to be President" --- if you have an endless supply of money. Of course, we had commemorative half dollars for illustrious Americans, but I think this dollar idea is just producing meaningless junk coins to collect. One might as well collect play money. The only benefit is that the US Mint might become self-sustaining; however, tax dollars saved on the mint operations would just be spent elsewhere (certainly not in the USA) bringing God, mother, and apple pie to countries with constitutions of thhe month.

I don't know but the two different branches I go to get new quarter about a month after they go on sell. One is Bank of America and the second is a smaller bank which is Farmers and Merchants. which are now owned by cascade bank. but both of these bank get new quarters. Farmers and merchant is also a bank where I get all of my half dollar they always have them when I go in. I guess If I have too much trouble I may just have to see if I can find one of those two bank who would special order me a box and then I could sell the roll for cost to everyone else who can't get them.
I guess only time will tell if the bank will have them more then just the 1st year. I am going to collect them but not for the historical part of thing main with the mixed opinion of so many you never know what the value of this set could be it could bust or could have a great collection that is hard to get you never know. Especially with so main different opinions on who will and will not be getting them. It is also making me what to start a Sac dollar collection that way I will get the president dollar as well as the sacs when they come out.
The only thing I am not looking forward to is cost of the proof and mint set. If you collect all 3 the silver proof, standard proof and the mint set you are looking probably over I would guess at least $130 for all three. and if you buy extra proof to brake then you are looking at a lot but I guess that is there goal. and I am sure the mint it going to sell the president set separately like the quarter have. SO more then anything it is more then a big money maker fro the mint.
