Here are 2 1880 P's that are Evil mimics of a 1879/80. 1 of them I think could be a 80/79 but I would like a better grade of this type before I would say for sure.

The first is the the one I have as a Mimic

Here is the one that I think has hope!

Russ,

I'm not seeing it in any of these examples, sorry. The top extrusions ( VAM 6 and 8) are usually obvious at that magnification. I also don't see the "check-mark" on any of these.

For the benefit of others, here's one of your shots with an overlay of the '7'. The bolded red is the "check-mark" we look for.

I'm not a VAM guy, but the first coin's date shows diagnostics of an 8/8 (n). Repunching may be evident elsewhere too. 8/8 RPDs on IHCs and other US coins look very similar. No doubt it's a VAM too.

The 1st one has a triangle of lamination right about where the spike would be. But that is all it is. Looking at it over head it looks like a 79/80 (mimic).

The second I am not sure of as there seems to be some chips in the second 8 and 0 but the toning inside the spaces make it hard to get a shot of it.

Like I said Mimic! :)
