Is this coin in relatively good condition?

If these coins turn up in uncirculated coidition, 1887 is the date you will most often find.

A brilliant uncirculated 1887 half crown can be bought for around $65; I have one in this grade, with obvios die crack detail. Bought it six years ago for $25.

Other dates of this type in (say MS62) would be around $200.

I would rate this one in VF; pleasing coin, nonetheless. Price shown on the holder is a tad high. That's OK.

Personally, I really don't care too, too much about condition. I'm not the one that has to have it in mint state. I don't mind the coin showing little traces of circulation here and there because it gives it character and shows the history; that's what I'm in to. I'm into the history of the coin, the date. I guess I can say that I'm a Rulers/Denomination collector. I find it fascinating to think of who possibly used these coins, the hands they were in, what they were used to buy, but I still like to hear different opinions and insights into my coins that I post.

Thanks for your input.

Bearing in mind that this coin could have been in circulation until the end of 1969, it is in splendid condition. It was probably kept by someone as a souvenir of Queen Victoria's Goldon Jubilee - an early commemorative issue!

EMC: Your way of looking at things is really the same as mine.

Actually, Americns and Austalians share a common numismatic heritage from the British, when it comes to before each Country's independence.

That heritage extends back to the time from when the Romans left the British Isles in the 4th century.

BTW I was lucky enough to secure a nice VF George 11 half crown at auction a couple of weeks ago.

Hello I have several 1887 half crowns and I can not find out which ones are the open veil and closed veil, the only difference I can find is some have 3 dots at the top of the crown and some have 4, also under Neath the dots some will have either one or two lines. Can any one help?.

Hello Matty, The common 1887 half crown had the Jubilee head with crown and veil, mintage over 1,000,000.The rarer
type had the Young head with no crown or veil.mintage about 260,000.I cant find any reference to a closed or open veil in any of my books. As for the dots a picture would be good. I've never seen one with 4 dots before.
Mason.
