I have this Washington commemorative medal/token and I was hoping to get some clarifying information on it. The date on the face of the coin is 1789, is that the manufacture date? or is that just the date of Washington's inauguration? The back side of the coin has the peace and friendship design that is being placed on some new nickels, which is interesting. If you gentlemen could help bring clarity to this medal/token I would very much appreciate it.

From another ebay listing.

Front has a bust of George Washington with the words

"GEORGE WASHINGTON PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES 1789" There is also a "D" mint mark

Back has clasped hands and a crossed tomahawk and peace pipe with the words "PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP"

Indian peace medals were originally circular silver medallions used by the U.S. Government to establish relations with Native Americans in the late 18th to 19th century; they were minted until the term of Andrew Johnson ended. Either the President or their agents gave medals to the chiefs of significant warriors of Native American tribes as tokens of friendship, sometimes accompanied by explanations of newly established U.S. sovereignty. This replica was minted in the 1960's and was fashioned into a necklace. It was purchased at the Gift Shop at the US Mint in Denver in 1972.

34mm Diameter

Bronze - looks like gold.

One listed on ebay at a Buy it Now price of $4.95.
