This raw 1858 cent is in exceptional condition, basically red, with some obvious scars. The details are marvelous, but the scratches affect the grade substantially. I'm wondering if the rotated die is desirable or not. Does the rotation have a positive or negative effect upon the value?

I'm looking forward to any comments :)

It is not uncommon to have die rotations on 1858/59's. It looks like the coin has been "wiped" causing the "straight" lines. Nice coin in the AU/BU area, may have some shelf wear, hard to tell by the picture.

I catalogued this one as OD4/RB2. It is tied for the most common 1858 die marriage. Tough to tell from the pics, if it has been wiped or not. Other wise AU-55 to MS-62 range. Nice coin.

you have a nice 1858. There is no premium for the rotation. These minor rotations are relatively common for the date. As Rob points out, the die pair is quite common for the date. The grade is very nice but the scratches are a distraction as you have already mentioned.

Thanks for your comments, much appreciated! I didn't realize that the rotation was as common as pointed out. I have no idea if the previous owner had the coin cleaned.
