Sound like a former President don't I? Anyway, could I get a good definition of "whizzing" a coin? Secondly, does it drop the value of a coin drastically like "harsh cleaning" or is the drop in value less precipitous? Input will be greatly appreciated. Paleoguy

Whizzing is mechanically abrading the surface of a coin for the purpose of simulating luster, sometimes done with a fine rotary wire brush. As you can imagine, it will seriously hurt the value of a coin as long as you are not fooled. At arm's length or in poor lighting, a whizzed coin can appear to be nice and lustrous. Under magnification, you can see that the light does not radially flow like natural luster and metal will be built up around the devices from the whizzing process.

I thought it was done using a padded wheel on a rotary grinder? Maybe with some jeweler's rouge?

That, too. Strictly defined, "whizzing" involves the application of rotary mechanical polishing force to a coin, resulting in an inappropriately-lustrous finish. It's just about as nasty and degrading a thing you could do to a coin.

yep, and it is probably proportionate with harshly cleaned as far as hurting value. Most people I have talked to (and myself included) believe when it comes to whizzing/harshly cleaned/polished or any other thing you can think of that is usually done trying to enhance the coins appearance usually decreases the value along side each other

I always thought it was called tooled. But I agree with biokemists definition.

"Tooling" is different; that's where you get a dentist's pick or some other sharp implement and attempt to carve new details into a worn coin, to make it look less worn.

Whizzing is harsh cleaning. The damage done to the coin is similar to that caused by very powerful acid. Whizzing can make a coin look better at first glance - see this classic thread for evidence - but is readily detectable under the right conditions.

By the way, there's a perfectly usable definition of "whizzing" in the CCF Glossary.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Thanks all for your inputs. Based on what we (I) have learned, if someone received back a coin that had been sent in for grading and the coin came back slabbed "AU Details - Whizzed", what do you deem the net grade of the coin to be?

Sad indeed.
