P.S.
If the obverse is too blurry I'll take another shot. I'm just going through a lot of photo's on the camera.

VG 8 and I think I'm being nice.

Am I right in saying the missing leg is from an extremely overpolished die?

Yea this is a known error coin and you did nail it on the head.

I too think you are being nice. I don't think it's G4, but I'm not 100% sold on VG8. I keep telling myself it's G6, but I'd love to think it could make VG8
Rest in Peace

I'd go VG. vanbroj started another thread in which he is looking for a G example. In doing some research, certified G-4 examples are extremely scarce, and G-6s are uncommon too.

That's probably because it's not worth certifying lol!

It's still a $500 coin.

No I'm well aware of that, but compared to the other grades. I'm just looking at it like this - if it's almost technically as low as it can go on the grading scale, I'm not slabbing it (that's different if it's a 1916-D merc or something). I'm going to toss it in an album or 2x2 because the $40 or whatever the cost of getting it slabbed would take about 8-10% of the coins value away.

And I guess I should explain myself on taking the value away. That's taking $40 off of the top of the coin if I were to sell. Call it overhead costs if you will. But if I can sell it raw for $450 and slabbed for $500 - well it's not worth all my time to get it slabbed. Hopefully I'm making sense? Probably not

I think you are making sense. Why waste your money when you are only going to sell it for a couple dollars more?
Rest in Peace

Well, it depends on the way it's sold imho. If you have a buyer in mind who is confident in grading, authenticating, and determining the problem status of this coin type; then I understand not wanting to slab it. If you want to auction it or offer it to a broad market, slabbing is essential to get the most out of a coin like this imho. Also, there is little chance for a buyer to later switch the coin and return, or return it saying it was "fake". In my mind though, in general, this is definitely a coin worth slabbing in any grade if trying to sell. Just my thoughts...:-)

I do understand the entire argument of buying a coin like this slabbed only so that does make sense. I know when I buy my next one it will be slabbed, but that's because I'm going to get an AU or MS version of it.

If you not getting it slabbed it's VG all day long ;)
But really I wouldn't be shocked if it went VG8
