Sorry to repost the same coin (posted in the Main Forum), but I'd like to try learning from this. This bust was a birthday gift from my mother, the dealer claiming AU. I've tried comparing it to slabbed busts on ebay, and it's somewhat tricky.

The details throughout most of the coin appear very strong, especially on the obverse. The reverse appears slightly on the weak side. In general I would guess a very strong AU. But there seems to be uneven wear. The Bust on the obverse and the "A" on the reverse seem worn more than the rest of the coin. It's almost as if some perv was molesting our poor Liberty woman

So what would you think for an overall grade? All I have is my wife's digital camera, and it's very tricky lighting the coin without casting a shadow on it.

I think the reverse is pretty dadgum strong, look at the eagles feathers. They didn't have the kind of presses they use today in 1825 so they are usually weaker around the rim. I will stand behind my first impression and say I dont see anything that would keep this coin from grading AU and I would be very disapointed in the grading company if it came back EF (unless there is something I just can't see in the pictures)

That's a strong AU. It sucks that there's a fingerprint on the reverse, though.

Yes. Strong AU if not UNC. Rub on the breast may keep it from 60 but it may be the photo.

That rub on the breast (darn perv) and the "A" in STATES on the reverse are in the same position on the coin, and both appear to be worn. I talked to the dealer (really nice guy) and he showed me a book with a section talking about grading bust halves. It talks about weak dies of the time, and specifically mentions "busts with a weak rim or what appears to be friction marks can still be considered Uncirculated"

The person who deals with PCGS wasn't in today, so I'm going to try to bring it tomorrow to have it sent off. After looking into it and the feedback on this site, I'm fairly confident it will come back with an AU rating. Even if it's AU-50 I will be more than happy.
