Mid to late 1982 the cent composition was changed from 95% copper to copper plated zinc.

The simple answer is any cents before 1983. even though some of the cents from 1982 are made of copper plated zinc you can sort those when you sort the 5 different varieties for 1982 lincoln cents to put into your book.
Don't let anyone stop you from asking questions, that's what were here for.

1982 was the transitional year, google is your friend. There's actually 7 different varieties in 1982. Most of the 1982 cents are large date, copper type.

Tees1tee you planing on saving coppers, If so I just started. You can find some cool contraptions on Youtube, Here's one that I'd love to have http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wM9RnDJo9D0 but its way to expensive for my blood. You can find some DIY ways to separate the coppers as well. Have fun.

I use the "ring" test to tell a copper cent from a zinc. Although, anymore I can tell from the difference in weight alone in my hand. I rarely use the ring test anymore. Search enough of them, and you can tell from the feel alone.
Funny how so many seem to be hoarding coppers these days. I see the end of copper circulating cents on the horizon. I always knew it would eventually come, its just happening sooner than I expected. My latest boxes have dropped from a 30% average for coppers 2 years ago to 15%. It will not be long and they will be gone.

When I have an 82 cent, I usually put it at the end of one finger, then place a known Zincoln at the end of an adjacent finger and compare the weight. Seems silly but it's really noticeable. I also try it with a pre-82 copper cent as a control instead of a Zincoln, and I get consistent results.
