When I was in high school, back in the stone age, you could buy $20 gold coins for 50-60 bucks for the common dates. The trick back then was coming up with the $50-60 dollars. I was making $1.40 an hour washing dishes in a Sambos restaurant. But I was looking long range so check out my next post.

Hey Johnny Countdown. Hang on to that little family of gold coins as long as you can. This is what they will look like when they grow up.

I don't know how old you are but I am guessing you bought these in the late 50's early 60's? 1962 is the year that popped immediately in my head :-) Anyway, my dad, who is now 73, told me that in the 60's when he was in the Army, walked into a coin shop in Kentucky, and bought a $5 Indian and a 1955 DDO LWC for less than $100! He sold them when he left the Army for a fraction of that price! He needed the money. Just saw that jfransch. WOWY ZOWY!

I was born in 55, starting collecting coins in 3rd grade and by high school 69-72 I was spending every dime I had on coins. Then off to the first attempt at college, dropped out, worked for a grocery chain for 13 years, spent every dime buying houses, then back to school for a degree, graduating in 88 and for the last 23 years I have worked in financial institutions and been back into coin collecting since I graduated. Oh to have known then what I know now. "Buy the rare dates in the best condition you can afford....period!" Thank goodness I had a coin dealer (long deceased now) who told me as a little kid in 3 or 4th grade to quit trying to fill my Indian Head cent book and just buy the 1877, 1909s and 1908s and then start buing gold coins. He was a big proponent of gold coins. When I go back to the bank tomorrow I will pull out some different coins to scan and post.

Incredible jfransch!
How many of us can say as a 3rd or 4th grader would think of collecting key dates and gold coins. I can't get enough comic books or toys back then. You sir have the will and desire to stick to your belief, I tip off my hat to you.

jfransch, This is for you sir. I have been involved in Numismatics for over 25 years now. I too have found that key dates are the way to go! Every Dansco or set I have ever started, I knock out the keys first. The other coins I am not as discriminating about but, I still care about eye-appeal :) I just bought a 1921 Walking Half today for the long term. I don't collect the series :) 09-S VDB too. Lincolns are not my thing.

well, jfranch just showed me up again! First with the doubloons and now the double eagles...I see how it is Kidding aside, that is a phenomonal hoard my friend! That must have taken years to acquire, and many of them look to be in great shape. Do you store them in a roll? I love keeping my half eagles together in a roll, and feel the heft continue to grow. It's very cool to hold 6.5 ounces of gold in the palm of my hand, I can't even imagine 30!

I know the forum has more gold out there, let's get it posted. All these coins are great, and over time will hold their value or increase in value. Johnny Countdown...no disrespect meant, if I was starting today it would be with half eagles as well, I just happen to have gotten a 40 year head start on you. I store all of mine in custom made mahogany coin trays that were made to fit in my extra large safe deposit box. And Vermontensium I agree 100%, the key dates are what to acquire first, the rest of the holes are easy to fill in in the future.
