Hi Everyone!

I am new to the hobby. My father in law is a collector, and after he walked me through his coins, I'm interested in bringing him something other than the plain Wheaties that I get from my cash registers.

I was doing some reading about the 1970S small date cent. After looking at some photos online, I'm torn about some cents I found. My eyes aren't that great even with a magnifier, so I was hoping I could get some thoughts on if 1 of these cents is a 1970S small date. I have an opinion, but I'm not going to say anything so I don't create any bias.

Thanks in advance for any opinions!

There are many threads on this topic where you can see some wonderful illustrations on how to tell them apart. Based on what I see though they are all large date.

Here's a very good comparison that's helped a lot of collectors:

A bit of advice about posting pics of the 70-S: If you can make the date level, it will be quicker to decide if LD or SD.

A and C definitely look like large dates to me. For coin B, the curled 9 sort of looks like the small date but then the 7 looks a little low, more like the large date. So I also think these 3 are all large dates.

Actually coin B seems like the small date. The thing that first made me think it wasn't was the position of the 7, but the photo is slanted a little. if I turn my head to look at it straight.... I think it is a small date.

So heres my opinion:

coin A: large date
coin B: small date
coin c: large date

Let others chime in though, I am not positive.

I think the curl of the 9 on coin B would indicate a small date. The difference with level or low 7 is so minute that it could go either way. I still think coin B (only this one) is a small date.

Besides the 9, the shape of the 7 and 0 are also diagnostic.
All your coins are large dates. They are very tough to find in circulation.

All large dates, the curl of the 9 would also be pointed ona SD, not blunt. But having your coins flat and level would make for much easier diagnostics.

All are large dates.

The best thing to do is buy a small date coin for reference. They are very inexpensive and you'll have a coin to compare to forever. Once you see it in person, you'll be able to spot them easily.
