One of his errors had me interested but I've since been informed how this sort of thing is done. It's just one step of sophistication above the typical 'hammer' job where two coins are hammered together. Typically 'hammered' coins are quite obvious because of the destroyed design on the side of the coin opposite that where the hammering took place. Apparently to stop this destruction of the design opposite you pad the coin with thin strips of leather. This allows enough transmission of the force to produce an impression of the hammered coin but enough padding on the other side to stop the destruction of the design. This particular seller has taken it one step further by putting leather between the actual coins being hammered together meaning that only some of the design is impressed. Very tricky.
Look closely at ALL his coins and you'll see that most are very similar. Note also that the same seller was previously offering up what were very obvious 2c coins that had 1c coins hammered into them. No doubt trying to cash in on the same sort of manufactured errors that realised $700-800 in a recent IAG auction.

Yeah I saw that coin too, and wondered how they do it! Thanks for the info.

Yeah, I noticed some of this sellers other coins - I didn't have to enlarge the pictures to be pretty sure it was PMD... a seller to stay away from was my reaction...

Interesting how that one is photographed in such a way to make it hard to tell if it's out-of-round? I reckon this seller knows what he's selling--he has a gallery of vise jobs!

If this was a second strike, the second would be stronger, first weaker.

Have a look at his (or her) completed listings. Amazing to have several pennies, different years, all with the same "mistrike" error!
The sad thing is the price some have fetched.
