Hello everyone,

I happened to be looking at two Susan B Anthony dollars recently and found that the earth on the reverse was different between the two. I double checked some others I had of the same years and found that, sure enough, the 1999 dollars were different from the others. If anyone has some information, I would like to know why the reverse is slightly different. Was it a new master die? Were there design changes? I couldn't find anything about this and just need more information

Here is the difference between the earths of the 1979 (first one) and 1999.

After almost twenty years they probably felt they needed to make some new master hubs. Most likely the master hubs had been destroyed years earleir because it was felt they were not going to be making any more SBA's. Kind of like the destruction of the Morgan dollar master hubs in 1910 and Peace dollar hubs in the 1930's. In each case years later it was decided to strike more and new master hubs had to be made.

I think it probably has more to do with the 18 year gap in production than anything else, they almost certainly had to create new masters. It is basically an identical situation to the 1921 Morgans which had a long lag in production and also used a new and slightly different design from 1878-1904 coins.
