The only legible part of the legend is on the reverse "PROVIDEN" and that looks incomplete as if there are letters afterward which can't be made out. Everything else is guesswork. I'm not so sure about these uncleaned coins anymore. While I enjoy the attribution aspect, 99.9% of them seem to be beyond help. The good part is I don't think I'm going to run into any fakes, at least not modern ones.

No, but I can read the letters "C" and "IVS" in the emperor's name. This, combined with a Wildwinds partial inscription search for "IVS PROVIDEN", gives me the solution: Claudius II, reverse PROVIDEN AVG. There's a PROVIDENT AVG type as well, but I don't think there's enough room there between the N and the V for two letters.

I still clean coins from time to time, but, like you, I have just about given up on the "uncleaned coins". Over half are culls and what is left are not much better. Like you, I truly enjoy attributing coins, but you have to have something to attribute!

As for the coin, I am out of town and have none of my references. I'm inclined to go along with SAP except that the portrait just doesn't look like Claudius II. The portrait is attractive and in the same manner as earlier Empire coins like Germanicus, Agrippa, etc, etc. SAP is probably correct though.

Based on what I see of the bust I would agree that it is Claudius II.

Definitely Gothicus, and the bust looks most like RIC_0187 Siscia. I agree, a very rakishly handsome portrait!

Thanks to all for the feedback and info. SAP I gotta say you have one hella setta peepers to make out C and IVS from that pic. I can't see it under a loupe even AFTER you pointed it out. Guess that's the difference between an experienced set of eyes.
