Hi,

I am new to this forum. I am from India. I have Australian ONE PENNY (copper) of year 1920, it has one side mentioned Commonwealth Australian Games.

Please advice what is the exact value for the coins.

Regards

to the forum.

Pics can help us accurately tell you what you have as well as grade.

The 1920 penny has 5 different varieties that are listed in the Krause catalog. None of them say "games" though. They all just say "Commonwealth of Australia." Here are the different varieties:

1920(m)- dot bellow bottom scroll
1920(sy)- dot above bottom scroll
1920- dots bellow bottom scroll and above upper
1920(m & sy)- without dots

The prices vary depending on which one you have.

Krause is next to useless in covering Australian pre decimals. The dot positions are dot below lower scroll, dot above lower scroll, dot above upper scroll, double dot (below lower and above upper) and no dot. The dot below scroll comes in both curved and flat based letter reverses. All other reverses are flat based. To complicate it further there are 2 obverse master dies (Indian and English) with the English found with dot below (scarce) and dot above lower scroll (very rare). Many catalogues also list the no dot English, but I have never seen a true example (my collection of 1920 pennies is huge and I have attempted without success to obtain one) so it would be extremely rare.
the Indian obverse is from at least 3 derivative master dies (possibly 4)and the English obverses may be from 2 derivative master dies.
Values range between 3 dollars for average grade dot below CBL (curved based letters) to over 30,000 dollars for the best English obverse coins (Unc grade)and dot over top scroll coins.

I usually use my Rennicks for Australian coins, but I'm at work right now and only have my pdf Krause. Still would like to see pics to determine which one it is.

The data on the mints/dots in "bluesheet" (and indeed most references) is wrong. Perth may well have produced some 1920 dated coins (they received some leftover dies from Sydney) and at least some no dot coins were minted in either Sydney or Perth (an obverse working die that wasn't from the batch prepared in India and used at Sydney was paired with 2 reverse working dies of which one was dot above scroll and the other a no dot).

Your comment about the Perth Mint producing 1920 pennies is just speculation, Perth Mint records do not indicate the production of pennies until December 1921, well after they received 4 1921 dated dies from the Melbourne mint. While they had 1920 dated dies from Sydney, it is unlikely that they would use them considering the availability of 1921 dies.
