Sandpaper has been scratching his head ,for awhile, on this one. I have ,for the longest time ,been seeing the hucksters ,on TV, with the bills sporting the first day postmarks and stamps.I cannot believe that collecters or sales people ran out and did this.I feel as though it was done by postal workers with instructions to do so in anticipation of future sales to the public. Any one agree?
I remember when the new $2's came out. Some of my friends picked them up at the bank and took them to the post office. Lots of people did. I'm sure some dealer did them in bulk.
I have one from the St. Louis district that was postmarked at the Arch in St. Louis on the release date, April 13, 1976. The Postal Service set up a station at the Arch for this very purpose. The Arch is formally known as the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, a federal park to honor Jefferson's role in the Louisiana Purchase.
