In the ongoing saga of the old bank bag...I have new info. Here is a better description of the bag. It is a heavy canvas bag...sewn across the top wth a heavy thread which is more like cord than thread. On the end of the cording there is a metal crimp or seal of some sort that has the letters OV in it. On the bag it says "Open bag carefully do not cut" and " Return bag to federal reserve" there is also a paper hang tag on it with the name of the bank my mother bought from back in the seventies. The hang tag is hand written. It is a $50 bag of loose pennies...definitely not in rolls. So is this a mint issued bag of new cents or could the bank have been sending this bag back to the federal reserve? The way the bag is sealed makes me think it is new from the mint as I don't think a bank would seal a bag in such an elaborate fashion, but the cents are loose and not in rolls. Any thoughts on which type bag this is? As always thanks for everyone's input :-)

Just a suggestion... it might be best to keep this as one thread, otherwise it might get confusing, especially if it's a long drawn out saga.

My guess is that there's no way to tell. you can either open it and hope it's not all 1 year. or you can sell it and have someone else have the fun of opening it. I say you just go for it.

I agree. Unfortunately, I cannot combine topics, only split them.

Here is the original thread...

I will lock it and point it here.

I think you should open it. Isn't this the kind of thing all roll searchers look for?
If you decide to sell it I would be interested too.

I have dealt with similar bags from banks, and the ones from the Fed, were labeled with the date and the mint such as "1970 S". The bags were in the period of 1968-1972, all were labeled and all cents inside were loose and correct date/mint and all BU. I am curious about an unlabeled bank bag and would have concerns if all inside would be the same.

Unless it is clearly labeled as a from the mint and has a year and MM, I don't see how you could get more for an unopened bag then an open one.

Sounds like the common every day Federal Reserve Bag that was used. Nothing special so far my guess is that the bag alone is worth anywhere from $10 - $25 plus $50 for the pennies.

If you do a search you should be able to find many FR bag such as the one you have.

The bags where sealed like that to prevent mysterious disappearance of coins.

I forgot to add my opinion on the topic when I posted my moderator comment above.

I say open it! You never know what you have until you open it.

I must add that I am in it for the coins, not the money. Any profit potential from selling an unopened bag is unimportant to me.

think about how much more fun it would be to open it yourself. selling it would let someone else have that fun and satisfaction. the thrill and fun is worth the potential profit in my opinion.
