Torex Auction June 23-25, 2011, Lot 982.

Coin bought at starting bid, sight unseen, with no picture available.

I call this my "ICCS Leprosy coin". This is what I get for "trusting" or "relying" on ICCS grading in a major national auction, when no pictures are provided, and you can't be "on site" physically to see the coin in hand.

Think this coin would pass PCGS? NGC? ICG? Heck, this coin wouldn't pass NNC, which is not even a real grading company!!

This is ICCS ladies and gentlemen...grading you can RELY on.

I wish these kinds of coins upon all ardent ICCS supporters. Shame on you, and shame on ICCS.

And thank you for making PCGS coins so cheap to buy here relative to ICCS graded junk. I'd take PCGS ANY DAY over ICCS. So keep selling them cheap. And keep your ICCS graded junk.

Technically it is VG8
That's why we have the adage "buy the coin not the holder"

You should also be upset with not only the garbage bag containing that coin, but the auctioneer as well. What was the original lot description in the Torex catalogue?

Pictures are always available on the icollector website, for internet bidders. Most of the images are posted weeks in advance.

We know the reputation of ICCS and the history of the auctioneer
With no photo it's a crapshoot
You were the only bidder and came out holding the short end of the stick
No surprise

Well...looks like this coin needs a bath in "professional ICCS coin restoration fluid"...

Maybe ICCS will relabel it a blast white MS-64, after I'm done with it...lol
Rest in Peace

It does look like crap, but I would agree with the grade.

It looks like exactly the pattern you'd get if a coin with typical wear sat in one of the old soft vinyl holders that break down into oil.

If you can't return it, I'd try BadThad's verdi compound or see if NGC's conservation wing can do anything with it.

VG8 coins don't all look the same. There are nice looking VG coins and crappy looking VG coins. Looks like you bought yourself a crappy looking VG coin. One of the first things I learned from reading these forums a long time ago was to buy the coin not the holder. Looks like you need to re read that rule.

just out of curiosity, what do you think the damage is?

Personally I see nothing wrong with this coin. Keep in mind it's nearly 120 years old, in VG and unlike the U.S. -T.P.G.'s, I.C.C.S. only grades on technical merit versus P.C.G.S. grades also on eye appeal.
All coins tone differently over the years and that's the beauty that adds character to the coin. If that 120 year old coin was blast white, in VG grade, then I'd be worried.
Trust me Danlos, when you turn 120, you won't look half as nice as that 1894 half!

I disagree with your post Glenzy that ICCS grades on merit and not eye appeal. I in fact think that ICCS prefers a coin that has a bright finish to it over a toned coin and a toned coin gets a lower grade.

They all makes mistakes even PCGS as I did not think I was allowed to show the scan last week on the diving goose. here is the scan and can a coin move in one of those secure holders?

Well...I think it was one of you big dealers that ICCS loves, that spilled some acid or dipping solution on the coin,

then sent it to ICCS and said: "Hey Brian...wink wink...I had a little accident...you know what to do"...
Rest in Peace

Yes, a coin can move in those holders.

Decades ago, Q. David Bowers opined that adjustment marks, since they were put there before striking, should have no effect on an otherwise identical coin's value.

OK, I'll buy should, but reality doesn't obey what should be.

Here are two identical coins, one has adjustment marks. 99 out of 100 people will take the unmarked coin at the same, or even higher, price. I don't care how they got there, they're scratches that detract from the coin.

I have silver coins with very splotchy toning, but on some level I consider them damaged.
Normally, when somebody pays for a graded coin, sight unseen, they assume no problems.
Particularly if it's a scarce date. The auctioneer failed the buyer here by not providing photos--perhaps the reason is obvious?

But, a photo was available: http://www.icollector.com/1894-50-I...G8_i10612625

Out of curiosity, if some dipping/acid involved, is it possible the effect seen occurred AFTER ICCS packaged the coin? In
