Just picked up my 2nd Redfield Morgan. Does anyone know if NGC will grade them and keep in original holder as they do with the GSA coins?

I think they designate the coin as coming from the Redfield hoard and put it in their slab.

Thanks numismaniac. Hope that's not the case. I'd prefer not to lose any of the historical value by taking them out of the holders. Not to mention any added premium it might add.

that is a good question. I will have to look that up and see what I can find out

Edit: its looking like numismaniac is correct according to this Heritage Auction http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleN...&lotNo=10505 and its in the new edgeview holder also so I am guessing this is their practice with these coins. There is one on ebay right now that has a sticker on the Reverse from NGC but its a little strange because it is just like their label but says they do not guarantee the coin as its not in one of their holders http://cgi.ebay.com/1896-P-Redfield...em19c73de6b8

Edit#2 On the NGC boards I found this http://boards.collectors-society.co...new=1#UNREAD

Thanks for the good info AND the research. That one on ebay is interesting as I see NGC graded it higher than the original Paramount grade. I assume that non-guarantee statement means they don't guarantee the grade as opposed to a non-guarantee of the coin. I had just joined ANA with the thought in mind of using their (NGC's) grading service but didn't want to do it if they took it out of the original holder.

Yes NGC WILL certify them in the Redfield holders. They don't use a band around the holder like the doe the GSA slabs, but they do put seals on the edges and a label on the back of the slab.
