Hello,

This thaler is an interesting coin produced in 1861, ten years before the unification of the individual German states (Bavaria, Baden, Wutturmberg, ect.) to form the German Empire. The coin commemorated the coronation of Kaiser Wilhelm the first and is one of my most prized German coins. I would greatly appreciate it if the online community would give some insight as to what the grade is and what he value is.

Thanks.

First, I have to say it is a very nice coin.

I'm not an expert on grading, but it looks about VF to me. It is 90% silver with an ASW of 0.5360 oz and a total mintage of 1,000,000. With silver prices so high, the coin is basically worth bullion value, so currently about $22.

In my opinion this coin is between VF and EF. We can settle for a good VF to be on the safe side, say VF30. I would expect value to be about $50. At least in Europe there is no difficulty achieving a significantly better price than just buillion value for these.

Yes - I think $40-$50 dollars is about right for these in that condition. If you're parpared to wait and watch you could pick up one on ebay for the lower amount. It's still a great coin though - and one of my first ever thalers too.

I just did a search for completed listings on ebay and you guys are right, they seem to go for at least $40. I wonder why my Krause lists the coin in VF condition to be worth only $12?

Maybe that search was too specific for ebay. I just searched 1861 thaler and found the same coin with a lower grade for $79.00 USD, though its real value is likely lower than that.

Thanks,

Krause valuations are imperfect guides. Astonishingly imperfect in some cases. I have seen valuations for older - and really valuable - Norwegian coins so low that you couldn't have bought the coin at that price 20 years before the catalogue was compiled. And these coins has risen sharply in value since.

Germany valuations are not as bad as for Norway, I guess the bigger countries inspire more effort on their part, but they are decidedly less than perfect. If possible, try to get value from additional places, like ebay listings or coinarchives.com.
