Welcome dbrown!
This time period in US coinage is one of a lot of changing designs. If this is where you were starting I'd get some coins from 1911 design, and coins from new design.
I'd go with High Grade one of each of the following (at least)
Nickels changed in 1913, so get a Liberty Head and an Indian Head
Dimes changed in 1916, get a Barber dime, and a Mercury dime
Quarters changed in 1916, Get a Barber and a Standing Lib
Halves changed in 1916, Get a Barber and a Walking Lib
I think junior_e gold recommendations are great also.
Silver dollars weren't minted during 1911-1918, but the new Peace design started in 1921 was meant to commemorate the end of World War I. To say the world is now in Peace because we had fought the 'war to end all wars'
