It seems to me that this seller is way out of the ball park on this quarter. Mainly because he has graded it MS64 and its a circulated quarter. I sent a message asking how it had been graded and he replied to me that it was self graded.

Circulated = MS64

Anyway, I wanted to get opinions, this is just an exercise in grading for myself.

What would you grade this quarter as based off of the pics.

For me I see obvious wear marks on the obverse and some wear on the reverse. I guess those could be tarnish or discoloring. I don't see any major scratches or dings and all devices look way sharp for a circulated quarter, but that wear bothers me, I don't know how to grade...it seems if I go by the book this would grade AT VERY BEST AU50 (This coin has sharp legends and devices show only a trace of wear on the highest points. There must be at least half of the mint luster still present., but I almost want to give it an XF because of the visible wear (The legends and devices on this coin are clear and sharp, with slight wear on the high points, and great eye appeal).

Am I being to hard on the grade?

This coin could be an MS-64. I am not sure where you are seeing wear as the coin looks like it has the full luster characteristic of MS coins. The photos are not the best and there may be some rub masked by the darker areas of the photos. If there happens to be some rub then it would probably grade AU-58 at worst.

Rub! that's the word I was looking for, should have used rub instead of wear. So I get really confused on how a coin can go MS with rub on it, I know those pics aren't the best but to me rub is definitely evident on it. Is an MS grade more highly dependent on viable wear (not rub) and luster? I also think I get myself confused on a circulated coin having the ability to be MS not sure why...Thanks D0ble3Eagle.

I think it looks Uncirculated to me and could very well be a MS-64 judging by the photos provided. I don't think the break in luster on the cheek is from circulation. I would be very surprised if a TPG called this coin circulated because of that little rub mark on the cheek and jaw area

Ok, my eyes aren't the best and i-net pictures do not often show the best resolution but this, in my opinion, is puzzling because of the wings and the hair.

I don't have a reference quarter but I would expect the hair curls to be more defined to rate EF-40.

Nonetheless, It appears to be a great specimen. Shine can be achieved by walking around with silver in your pocket.
