This coin is going up for auction at a local auction , and wanted you opinion on it. I think the coin is fake based on the stars on the obverse, and the fact that the coin is in such great condition.

(Only one picture was posted on the site, I have asked for more)

Yep, has to be a fake with that 8X7 star arrangement. The 1797 dollar comes with either 9X7 or 10X6 star patterns.

This counterfeit at least looks like the portrait was done with some skill. Might be worth a buck or two as a pocket piece or novelty. Might even be made of silver but I wouldn't count on it.

Yeah, the stars are the first thing that I noticed.

I am going to contact the auctioneer, and tell him that the coin is a fake.

Logan, The early dollars did not have the denomination on either the front or the back of the coin. Instead it was expessed on the edge as ONE HUNDRED CENTS ONE DOLLAR OR UNIT. Many of the older Chinese fakes didn't bother lettering the edge and either left them plain or gave them a reeded edge. Those fakes are naturally EASY to spot. More recent ones are also getting the edge inscription right. they also have problems in getting the star arrangements right. Early dollars can have 13, 15, or 16 stars and they varied in how many were on the left and right of the bust. In the case of the coin above they have used an arrangement that was never used on the genuine coins of that year.

How do you know it isn't genuine simply because it has 8x7 stars? There are several other denominations of 1797 with this arrangement, so it is perfectly possible that a few one dollars also were struck with it.

If they were they'd have to be pretty darn rare considering that none have been seen in 221 years.
