Hello. I have had these notes for a number of years which were handed down through my family. Every now and then my curiosity returns and I try to find out more about them. There are 26 all together which I've tried to detail in the list below. The rarity number relates to the CNRS rarity scale which was provided to me by someone from the Hudsons Bay Company Archive Center a few years ago. I have managed to get hold of some pages from "Canadian Merchant Scrip (A Charlton Standard Catalogue)" by R. J. Graham, 2007. which lists some of the notes. I also came across an online auction for a note here: http://www.icollector.com/1820-Huds...ngs_i8547005That sums up everything I know. I was wondering if anybody here might be able to tell me even more about them? Or suggest good places to sell them if I were to go down that route. Is it as simple as ebay, or are there more specialised sites for this? Collecting money isn't a hobby of mine so I'm new to this, apologies if my info isn't as accurate or as detailed as it could be. Thanks for reading. Edited by prhymeate 08/05/2011 8:56 pm

I personnaly would go the consignment route to a well known Auction House. They will do the research for you or know that material. No risk as they will try to get as much as possible for every item. They get paid with the buyer's premium. No risk to you,at most you will pay a small consignment fee which I would negotiate to 0% if I was you.

Thanks for the advice, it's much appreciated. Maybe this is a naive question, but is there much of a market for these? I live in the UK so I'm wondering if it would be worth the effort of auctioning them somewhere where they may be appreciated more like Canada for example.

I know nothing about these, but have emailed a much more knowledgeable friend looking for advice.

I can't recall ever hearing about these before. Interesting. I'll be keen to see what other information is brought to light. Thanks.

I would think the biggest market would be in North America. The condition of the note would also affect the net value. I noticed that your link was to an auction in eastern Canada. Ironically, Geoffery Bell Auctions would be one of the few auctioneers I would trust with this sort of stuff - it would make for one heck of a featured section of any auction in Canada! Any chance you can share some photos of the notes?

Thanks very much Zonad, any help is appreciated so I really appreciate you taking the time to email your friend.
I'll post some photos of the notes tomorrow when I have more time. They vary from being in average condition, to what I would consider pretty good condition given their age. Again, I know little on the subject so it is difficult for me to judge accurately.

Hudson's Bay script is sought by many paper money collectors; also small museums. Most times they command good prices. I know I keep looking for one for my personal collection and then also for our local museum collection. Unfortunately most of the times the prices realized far exceed my budget. I wish you luck. Don't forget - Olmstead Currency - they deal in mostly paper and I know Don would certainly like to hear from you.

Thanks for the photos! A fantastic piece of Canadian history! You could also send your list of notes to the curator of the Canadian National Currency Museum, to see what their comments are on the scarcity of some of those notes.

Thanks again for all the advice. I will get in touch with the Canadian National Currency Museum and see what they know about them. I think I'd like to get one or two framed as they look nice and are interesting pieces of history and also relate to my family. However it would also be nice for them to be appreciated by others in a museum or private collection. Its also difficult to ignore their possible monetary value were I to sell them. I guess the more I find out the better :)

Being a direct desendant of Henry Hudson, I have always wanted a hudsons bay note. While working in an old building downtown I actually found some HBC coins. I didn't know what they were at the time as they just looked like planchets with HBC and a number on it so I gave them to the boss-man at the time and they will be going into the buildings display case when it is fully renovated.

That's a great story Imohtep, it must have been a nice surprise to find out what they actually were! It's nice that they are going somewhere where people will see them.

I've never seen any of those before, absolutely beautiful pieces of history there.
All the best to you in your auctions, whoever manages to get them will be extremely happy.
