I found this in a bunch of wheat cents my brother-in-law gave me.
Any idea what it might be (or have been at one time).

Anybody-Know-What-This-

The other side of the coin is worn completely smooth. It is VERY thin maybe even less that 1/2 the thickness of a Lincoln Cent.
The design and the 2.50 is what is throwing me.

I'm totally confused.

Looks like a very worn 2.5 dollar gold piece. I can't say whether it's genuine or not

The coin on the right appears to be a $2.50 gold piece. It looks slightly corroded or waterlogged, but if it's real, it's definitely worth over $300. Did he find this with the wheat cents? Incredible if so!

I think it's a replica of a 2.5 dollar gold coin that was used in some sort of jewelry, money clip, tie clip, belt buckle or similar item.

I remind all of a basic fact of metallurgy ... Gold does not corrode or oxidize within the time span that we can observe.

Gold coins dug from the earth that are thousands of years old are still ... well ... golden.

The object show by the OP on the right in this thread is something ... but it is not a gold coin.

... and further add made from some base metal that does corrode over time.

It looks like a Civil War era counterfeit. Some of these were found with metal detectors at Confederate camp sites. I have a badly corroded one that was found in Virginia. Just as thin and cracked like yours.

Thanks for the comments everyone.
What was throwing me was the fact that I could not find any US coin that had this exact same reverse design. The two and a half dollar gold coins have "2 1/2" written under the eagle with a "D" by it to state 2 1/2 Dollars. I figured this was some sort of a counterfeit piece or a token off a piece of jewelry but the thing that was throwing me was the "2.50". Also the fact the the obverse is completely "worn" smooth could also mean that it never had a design at all.
