so is that just the cost of the 1 ounce of silver and not any value on the coin it self? because I have many other coins that are "one troy ounce .999 fine silver". that would mean for every coin that is "one ounce" is at bear minimum $38-$39.

ok so what about the silver coins that don't say one troy ounce. like the silver half dollers or the silver quarters. and such I have a bunch of those and was just wondering how do I tell the value of these.

I guess my biggest question is if I find a random coin how do I find out if it is valuable or not. other than asking on this forum for each coin. is there any web page that lists a large selection of like "key dates" for coins.

It is not a coin, just a silver round so there is no numismatic value.

For circulating US silver coins, common coins tend to be valued on their silver content due to the current high spot prices. Better date coins can be much more valuable. As for looking up value, it is not as simple as you might think. Condition greatly affects the value as does the year and mintmark. You may want to see if your local library has a copy of A Guide Book of US Coins aka "The RedBook", lots of good information in there. You can also check for values online at http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/fmv.shtml but it lacks the detailed information contained in the RedBook.
