Hi all,

I was thinking about selling a 1799 XF details - rated by NGC.

I took the coin to a dealer, and he was shocked when the coin came back as improperly cleaned. He had over 30 years in dealing. The coin left the country and came back from the South Pacific in the mid 1960s. It was probably cleaned over there by their professional standards. Would those standards differ 40 years ago versus today in the US?

I think the coin was worth around 5k, but now that it's improperly cleaned, I'm trying to determine if 3k is too much.

thoughts? Anyone know a good online auction site?

For a coin of that value, maybe see if ANACS or PCGS agrees with that assessment.

I don't really get the whole 'improperly cleaned' thing.
If they are using that terminology, shouldn't there also be a category for 'properly cleaned' ?
Otherwise, they should just say 'cleaned' using the term as a pejorative.

I bought a 1799 dollar very similar to that one last year on ebay for ~1600 + shipping. It can be viewed on this site in an old thread. It was a raw coin though. That seems to create a world of difference in some eyes/minds, even though they would look the same in an album.

It seems this coin hobby has more twists and turns than a rally course.
