The pics are gorgeous on my Droid. High AU on a 4" screen. I may change my mind when I see it on a 26" monitor.

It doesn't have much wear, but I think all of the hits on the jaw would lower it AU50/53

I like the coin but not the gashes...1881-s is a fine year with fabulous strikes aplenty....while appears AU55 I don't think you can get AU55 money for it from the marks on the bridge of the nose, cheek, deep gash on the neck on just above the 3rd left star, I'm sure it will be down graded if gradable at all due to there are so many problem free coins out there for this year...if it were a KEY DATE it might get some slack...This coin could take a big hit....for price...Would you Pay full AU55 price for this coin with these marks or Full price AU55 for a problem free coin?

Nope! Not even spot. It wouldn't pass my eye candy test to start with. But the OP was just asking opinions for grade

This the most important thing in collecting. ANYTHING. learning what years are great strikes, and although they may be plentiful... how that effects the value, but so true it is of some years which are very well known for crappy strikesw in general...in general they are often lower valued, until graded, but the price of grading offsets the value of the coin.. one must learn which years suffer from weak strikes and what it means on the whole. as those same years have many great strikes...Many would say that ALL New Orleans mint marks are always weakly struck...for most of its years... but this is not true...yet MANY New Orleans minted coins are weak in detail...BUT not a rule for all years...All year suffer from the same things....UNFORTUNATELY we seem to need TPGS to decide from the left or right.....they must be polloticians LOL....After 40 years of collecting WE some how don't know how to grade a coin......or how to change with the tides....WHAT DOES THAT MEAN....to change with the tides? IT MEANS MONEY...like stocks...the more you let higher grades in from "private collections" that are not in the over all known inventory....suddenley the basics of supply drop the value of said coins.... WE can't have that... But what of the coins that have already been accepted and the values they represent:? its the eye of the beholder in times of change like these
